Hallelujah Festival
The 2025 edition of JSO’s Hallelujah festival bears the title Hear Our Voice. A deep and resounding call, it is both a plea and a proclamation. The human voice in its various guises –voice of prayer, voice of message, voice of personal and public responsibility – stands at the center of this year’s artistic program.
The festival brings together sacred traditions, operatic drama, liturgical depth, classical composition and authentic communal roots – threads intertwining in the rich textures of our cultural fabric – and offers a diverse experience, traversing boundaries of languages, of faiths, and of musical styles.
Highlights include Ben- Haim’s Yizkor and Weinberg’s Kaddish symphony, profound musical responses to loss and remembrance; the intensity of Puccini’s Il tabarro and Tosca, where voice confronts power and longing; and Kedusha, a journey into the sacred sounds of Jewish Europe with the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra; Mendelssohn’s Elijah channels prophetic fire, while Strauss’s Die Fledermaus offers a sparkling, celebratory reprieve. We close with a tribute to the iconic Umm Kulthum, performed by Firkat El Nur— a celebration of Arab musical heritage and a voice that continues to echo across generations. Hallelujah 2025 is a call to listen – with reverence, curiosity, and an open heart.

The Jewish Music Series
In collaboration with the Jerusalem Municipality
From its first days as a broadcasting ensemble, the orchestra has maintained a close connection with Jewish tradition. The first musical sounds played over the airwaves, in the launch event for the Mandatory Broadcasting Service broadcasting station in March 1936, came from the piano of Arieh Sachs, one of the orchestra’s founders. He played the introduction to a song sung by cantor Chaim Vittorio Weinberg.
The Jewish cantorial tradition draws its melodies from tunes used in prayer, but it also leans on operatic singing. Weinberg completed his studies in singing at the Conservatory in Milan; Yossele Rosenblatt used to visit the theater and opera of Hamburg, and even met the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso in the city. In their performances, leading cantors usually combine performances of arias and songs from selected operas.
The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra is proud to present a series dedicated to lovers of Jewish music.
