Frédéric Chaslin, the JSO’s current Music Director, will be finishing his tenure at the end of the 2018/19 season, the end of his contract, following eight years in which he had led the orchestra to many significant musical achievements. To name but a few of those, Chaslin had promoted moves who had helped the creation of a loyal subscribers’ audience, outlining a clear professional path which has enabled the JSO to harness its abilities to high standard performances of challenging works from the Classical repertoire, and new works, including premieres of Israeli works. Under the baton of Maestro Chaslin, the JSO had re-established its status as an international orchestra when performing overseas. Among others, Maestro Chaslin had conducted the orchestra in its performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13, ‘Babi Yar’, at a concert held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, commemorating International Holocaust Day. Also during Chaslin’s tenure at the JSO, the orchestra had embarked on several successful concert tours in the U.S., South America, Japan, and more.
The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra will assemble a selection committee in order to select a new Musical Director. The new Musical Director will begin his tenure at the beginning of the 2019/20 season and will be responsible for the assembly of orchestra’s seasonal programmes, and for their execution, as well as promoting, enhancing and maintaining the orchestra’s abilities.
The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, IBA’s CEO, Yair Stern: “The JSO is working to locate its next Music Director, who will be responsible for guiding it, safely and with talent, to fill Maestro large boots and to add to his achievements. Chaslin’s place in The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra’s glorious history is guaranteed, and the JSO will invite him to conduct over us during the next season. We thank him for good, significant and fruitful years of cooperation and for his choice to extend his contract by another season, in order for the process to be held in an orderly fashion.”
Frédéric Chaslin will continue in leading a significant change at the JSO during his last season as Music Director, the 2018/19 season, through an artistic line in which sees a change in traditional structure of the subscribers’ season: traditional series will make way for new series, mainly the ‘Conductors Series’, the ‘Pianists’ Series’ and the ‘Soloists’ Series’ – series that will place the people behind the music in the center and who would help in harnessing the orchestra’s progress and its musical doing in the last few years by setting a spotlight on the next generation of players, those who will be leading the orchestra in the years to come.
